Translated by William George Aston and published in A History of Japanese Literature, Chapter IV (1899). On a whithered branch was written by Matsuo Basho in 1680. Basho was considered the master of the haiku poetry form.

On a whithered branch
A crow is sitting
This autumn eve.
Japanese: (かれえだにからすのとまりけりあきのくれ) kareeda ni / karasu no tomari keri / aki no kure
