Understanding the Story
1. Who is Culhwch, and what does he want at the start of the story?
2. Why is the giant Ysbaddaden afraid of anyone marrying his daughter?
3. What does King Arthur do to help Culhwch?
4. Can you name some of the six knights who help Culhwch on his journey? What are their special powers?
5. Why do you think Olwen tells Culhwch to promise her father whatever he asks?
6. How do the knights complete the impossible tasks? Do they do them alone or as a team?
7. What happens to Ysbaddaden at the end of the story?
Teamwork, Co-operation, Independent Thinking
1. Culhwch could never complete the tasks alone. How does teamwork help him succeed?
2. Each knight has a different special ability. How does this help them solve the giant’s challenges?
3. If you were on a quest like Culhwch, what special power would you want, and why?
4. The knights use cleverness instead of fighting to win. Can you think of a time when using your brain helped you solve a problem?
5. What do you think would have happened if the knights had tried to complete the tasks alone?
Perseverance, Courage

Fairness, Promises

2. Do you think it was fair that Culhwch wanted to marry Olwen, even though he knew Ysbaddaden would die if he did?
3. Culhwch promises to do whatever the giant asks. Do you think it is important to keep promises? Why?
4. At the end of the story, Culhwch wins Olwen’s hand in marriage, and Ysbaddaden’s prophecy comes true. Do you think the story has a fair ending? Why or why not?
5. If you could change something about the story, what would it be?
