LET’S DISCUSS THE STORIES ~ IDEAS FOR TALKING WITH KIDS
Understanding the Story
- Why does the King want to go to town? How does he plan to find a queen?
- What test do the King and Ben come up with to find the right person?
- How does Mindy-May react to the beggar? Why do you think she acts that way?
- How does Alice Brown treat the beggar differently? What does that say about her?
- What is the lesson the King learns by the end of the story?
Love, Beauty
- The King at first wants a “cutie” for a wife, but then he decides that kindness is more important. Do you agree? Why or why not?
- The story says that beauty is “in the eye that does behold.” What do you think that means? Can different people see beauty in different ways?
- Have you ever been in a situation where you had to choose between being kind and ignoring someone in need? What did you do?
Kindness
- The King learns that what’s inside a person’s heart is what really matters. Can you think of someone in your life who is very kind? How do they show their kindness?
- What does kindness mean to you? What are small ways we can be kind every day?
- If you were writing a story like this, how would you test for kindness? What kind of adventure would your characters go on?
Fairness
- The King and Ben dress as beggars to test people’s kindness. Do you think this was a fair way to choose a queen? What might be a different way to test for kindness?
Conversation
- Why do you think many people ignored the beggar instead of helping him? Have you ever helped someone in need?
- What do you think is more important—how someone looks or how they act? Why?
- If you were in Alice Brown’s place, how would you have treated the beggar?
